I brewed an Oatmeal Stout with a first time brewer – my cousin Luke, when he came to visit for an extended weekend. We did an all grain brew and he got to jump in on all the fun parts of brewing (mashing, boiling, sampling home-brews throughout the process) while avoiding the not so fun parts: cleaning equipment!

I received a free packet of Danstar’s Belle Saison yeast at the 2014 American Homebrewers Conference in Grand Rapids, Michigan last year. It has been sitting in the refrigerator because I’ve never been a huge fan of saisons. That changed after I recently brewed a 3 gallon batch just to use the yeast packet.
I decided it was time to stop pouring my draft beer out of picnic taps in my chest freezer, and to finally build a keezer. I timed the build (quite conveniently) when my dad came to visit me for the week. It was a good decision, because he had great ideas from building the collar, to putting it on wheels.

What better time to brew a stout than around the Christmas holiday? I took a week and a half off of work and made sure I had all the ingredients in house for a high gravity cream stout.
